Clemson University's newly hired chief diversity officer says the school's administration is committed to improving the racial climate on campus.

News outlets report that Chief Diversity Officer Lee Gill, who started Monday, told a crowd of about 200 during a Wednesday forum on the status of black faculty and staff that he will make sure that commitment is carried out.

University President Jim Clements said the university's police department deserves praise for last week's arrest of a student accused of making racial threats on the anonymous social media application Yik Yak.

Other speakers at the forum were less positive about current race relations at the school.

Several speakers, black and white, said white co-workers have been openly mocking students' ongoing sit-in effort to demand for more diversity.
