Abney Center Hardwood Honors Annie Tribble

ANDERSON, S.C. – Prior to Saturday afternoon’s basketball doubleheader with Brevard, Anderson’s Abney Athletic Center basketball court was named “Annie Tribble Court” in honor of the longtime head women’s basketball coach.

With several of her former players on hand, Tribble was honored by friends as well as current and past colleagues and administrators at courtside.

In addition, a portrait was unveiled that will be displayed in the lobby of the Abney Center of the coach who revived the Anderson women’s basketball program in 1967. In her first six seasons, Anderson posted an impressive 66-19 record and recorded one national runner-up finish and she went on to guide the Lady Trojans to three national championships.

Coach Tribble, a native of Anderson and a graduate of Girls High School and Anderson College, led the Trojans to the first of three AIAW junior college national championships in 1974. The Lady Trojans also won national titles in 1975 and 1976 with Tribble amassing a stellar 155-33 record at the helm of the Anderson College program.

Following the 1975-76 campaign, she was named the head women’s basketball coach at Clemson University and went on to guide the Lady Tigers to seven seasons of 20 wins or more and seven postseason tournament appearances.

She coached five All-Americans and eight all-conference players during her time as a head coach and was honored as the South Carolina Coach of the Year in 1977 and also served as the South Team coach for the National Sports Festival games in 1981. Tribble played a major role on the U.S. Olympic Committee that was instrumental in selecting the 1976 U.S. Silver Medal team.

She and her husband, Glenn, currently reside in Pendleton, S.C., and are proud grandparents of 11 and have five great-grandchildren. She was inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994 and is a member of the Anderson University and Clemson University Athletic Halls of Fame. In 2011, she was honored as an Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Legend.
