WANDA SORRELLS

SENECA - Wanda Sorrells, 59, of 134 Monroe Drive, died Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at her residence. She was the daughter of Paul and Virginia Sorrells. She was a salutation of Seneca High School and graduated from the Horticulture Department at Clemson University and remained there for 10 years. She worked for 15 years at Park Seed Company and Sylvan Learning Center for 6 years.

Surviving are her 3 brothers, Sidney Sorrells (Carolyn), Dennis Sorrells and Wayne Sorrells (Ann), 3 nieces, 1 nephew, 4 great nieces and 3 great nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 3pm Friday at Utica Baptist Church in Seneca, SC. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3pm prior to the service. A private internment will be held at Ramsey Creek Natural Cemetery in Westminster, SC.

An additional memorial service will be held at 11am Saturday, February 4 at Laurel Baptist Church in Greenwood, SC. The family will receive friends following the service.

JIMMY E. BEAUCHAMP  

ANDERSON, SC - Jimmy Elijah Beauchamp, 70, returned to His Lord and Maker on Friday, January 27, 2012 at AnMed Health Medical Center. He remained a loving husband and father, who cherished his family, church and country.

Born October 5, 1941 in Marianna, FL, he was the son of the late E. C. and Oneta Register Beauchamp. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran and retired Industrial Engineer and safety officer with the City of Miami Beach. Jimmy was later the 501 coordinator of special education needs for Florida International University. He attended New Covenant Church.

Surviving are his wife, Orlynne Taylor Beauchamp of the home; 2 sons, Jason Beauchamp and Joshua Sears both of Anderson; 2 sisters, Evelyn Ashby (Delroy) of Naperville, IL and Carol Shaw (Tom) of Keller, TX. Jimmy was preceded in death by a brother, Earle LeGrand Beauchamp. 

A graveside service will be held 11am Tuesday at M.J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery with Dr. David Rountree officiating. Military rites will be preformed by the Campbell Patriots Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Monday from 5 until 7pm at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, 3205 Hwy 81 N.

The family is at the residence, 1203 Stonehurst Drive.

JESSE LEE SHARPE

AUGUST 8, 1918 – JANUARY 28, 2012 

ANDERSON, SC – Jesse Lee ”Cat” Sharpe, age 93, of 1424 East Calhoun Street, died peacefully at his residence on January 28, 2012. 

He was the husband of the late Ruby Herring Sharpe, and a son of the late W. B. Sharpe and Mary Etter Huckaby Sharpe.  Mr. Sharpe was born in Honea Path, SC and retired from Owens Corning after 28 years of service.  He proudly served in the US Army during World War II stationed in Japan and Korea, receiving The Bronze Star for Heroic Achievement.  Mr. Sharpe was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.  One of his most known accomplishments was his prized turtle stew which brought him state-wide recognition.

Mr. Sharpe is survived by his son, Ronnie Sharpe, and wife Sandy; daughters, Debra Burke, her husband Robbie and Karen Sharpe, all of Anderson; grandchildren, Allison, Lindsay, Dwain and Jeremy; great-grandchildren, Bradleigh, Timmy, and Meritt; and sister-in-law, Sara Sharpe of Belton.  In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Sharpe was predeceased by his brothers, Floyd and Ralph Sharpe.  Jesse was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

The family will receive friends on Monday, January 30, 2012 from 11:00 a.m. until Noon.  The Funeral Service will begin at 12:30 p.m. in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with the Rev. Curtis Bundy officiating.  Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum with military honors provided by the Upstate Veterans Honor Guard.

The family will be at their respective homes.

LOU ANN M. CHASTEEN

JANUARY 11, 1934 – JANUARY 27, 2012

ANDERSON, SC – Lou Ann M. Chasteen, age 78, of Anderson, died at her residence on January 27, 2012. 

She was the wife of Charlie W. Chasteen, Sr., and daughter of the late Joel Homer Milford and the late Clara Holbrooks Milford.  Mrs. Chasteen was born in Hartwell, GA on January 11, 1934.  She was owner/operator of Bella Donna Beauty Salon in Anderson and was member of the American Legion and the VFW Auxiliary.  She was a member of Sardis Baptist Church in Hartwell.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by 2 brothers; Alton “Boone” Milford and Jimmy Milford, both of Hartwell, GA; 2 sisters, Sue Floyd and Doris Agnew, both of Hartwell, GA. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Chasteen was predeceased by 4 brothers, Harold, Carey, Thomas and Joel Milford; and a sister, Frances Cleveland. 

The Funeral Service celebrating the life of Mrs. Chasteen will be held at the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home at 2 PM on Monday, January 30, 2012 with Rev. John Silver officiating.  Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. 

The family will be at their respective residences and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Monday from 12 Noon until 1:30 PM.

GLORIA KLUGH

JUNE 22, 1925 – JANUARY 25, 2012

ANDERSON, SC – Gloria Gaines Klugh of Anderson, South Carolina, died peacefully on January 25, 2012. 

She was the wife of the late Arthur M. Klugh Jr., daughter of the late Thomas Rucker & Lucile Talmadge Gaines.  She had three children: Arthur M. Klugh III (died in 2002), Lucile Talmadge Klugh Pidgeon, & Katherine Gaines Klugh Hearn (died in 1983).

She was born on June 22, 1925, in Hartwell, Georgia, moving to Anderson, South Carolina, in 1927. Gloria was educated in Anderson schools and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Agnes Scott College and a Master of Science degree from the University of Georgia.

Gloria was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, Anderson, South Carolina.

Gloria is survived by her sister, Mrs. Lucile Gaines MacLennan of Charleston, South Carolina; her daughter, Lucile Klugh Pidgeon and her husband Philip Pidgeon IV; her grandson, Arthur M. Klugh IV and his wife, Lauri, and their sons: William Arthur Klugh and Walker Mills Klugh. She is also survived by her faithful and devoted dog, Cruiser.

The Funeral Service will be held at 11am on Saturday, January 28th, at First Presbyterian Church, Anderson, South Carolina. Burial will be held immediately following the service at Old Silver Brook Cemetery.

RALEIGH H. POWELL, JR.

ANDERSON, SC - Raleigh Henley Powell, Jr., 87, passed away at peace with his heavenly Father on Sunday, January 22, 2012 at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson, SC. 

He was a Navy veteran of World War II serving in Hawaii and the Pacific.  He and his family were long-time members of Washington Pike United Methodist Church in Knoxville, TN, where he served as a teacher, class president, and president of the men's club.

His professional life spanned two careers.  Following graduation in communications from the University of Georgia, he launched a career in broadcasting, serving as a newscaster, program director, and sports director for several stations in Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee.  He began his work in sports by broadcasting baseball for the minor league Rock Hill, SC Chiefs, both live and by teletype.  He did play-by-play on the  Clemson Tigers football network in the early 1950's as well as baseball for the Anderson, SC Rebels in the minor Tri-State League.  Later, he was a color analyst on the Vol Football network in Knoxville, TN. 

In 1962, Raleigh switched careers by accepting a position with Oak Ridge National Laboratory for work in public information, as a news editor, and later as a technical writer/editor for which he was the recipient of several national awards from the Society of Technical Communications.  Raleigh retired from Oak Ridge National Laboratory. 

In his community, he was quite involved as a coach of minor league (peewee) football.  Both of his sons played on his team in their youth.

Raleigh is preceded in death by his loving, understanding wife and best friend of 65 years, Dorothy Chamblee Powell, by his youngest son, Christopher Allen Powell, at the tender age of 43.  Survivors include his daughter, Jackie Nelson and her husband, Al of Anderson and son, Raleigh Powell, III of Knoxville, plus many friends, relatives, colleagues, locally and distant.  He is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 4PM Thursday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel with Rev. Elwood Orr officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Entombment will take place in Knoxville at 1PM Friday at Highland South Memorial Park Mausoleum with Dr. Pat Polis officiating.

MRS. FAYE SWANEY KENDALL

April 10, 1951 – January 21, 2012

Mrs. Eunice Faye Swaney Kendall, age 60, of 601 Central Road, Pendleton, died peacefully at her home on Saturday, January 21, 2012 surrounded by family and friends.  Born in Pendleton, she was a daughter of the late B. F. Swaney and the late Eunice Powell Swaney.

Faye was once employed by the World Finance Company, and subsequently founded her own company, Orange Financial Services in Orange, Texas.  She loved her red roses and playing card games, particularly “Scat.”  Mrs. Kendall also enjoyed boating and fishing.

Survivors include her husband, Roger M. Kendall of the home; a son, Rodney Boltin of Jacksonville, FL; a daughter. Marie Crooks of Orange, Texas; brothers, Lewis Swaney (Frances) and Ernest Swaney (Judy) of Pendleton; Sisters, Mae McAlister (Roy), Joyce Long (Earl), Shelby Stamey (Jim) all of Pendleton, and Loretta Hendricks (Leroy) of Six Mile, SC; 5 grandchildren, Mason, Nancy, and McKinlie Crooks; Brittney and Monica Boltin.  Also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews.

A service honoring the life of Mrs. Kendall will be held Thursday, January 26, 2012, at 2 PM, at The McDougald Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Sam Duncan officiating. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens, Clemson.  The family will be at the home of a sister, Joyce Long, 700 Central Road, Pendleton, and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home Wednesday, January 25, 2012, from 6 PM – 8 PM.

THELMA KING

February 24, 1922 – January 22, 2012

ANDERSON, SC - Thelma Cornelia Smith King, age 89, wife of the late MGy Sgt. Edgar Lee King, formerly of Mayfield Drive, passed away on Sunday, January 22, 2012, at NHC Health Care in Anderson. 

Born in Anderson, SC on February 24, 1922, Mrs. King was a daughter of the late Arlington Floyd Smith and Alice Rebecca Fowler Smith.  She worked for many years at Appleton Mills and was a homemaker. Mrs. King was a former resident of Morningside Assisted Living before moving to NHC HealthCare.  She was a member of Providence Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Margaret Chamblee and her husband, Alan, sons; Lee King and his wife, Sandra, Rev. Mike King and his wife, Sue, all of Anderson and Milton King of Yellville, AR; brother, Wilton Smith and his wife, Sybil of Anderson; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by brothers, William and Melvin Smith; sisters, Montez Bryant, Thrace Haley, Mildred Russell and Jeanette Finley.

The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 11:00 am in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with her son, the Rev. Mike King officiating.  Interment will follow in New Silver Brook Cemetery.

The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

MIKE JONES

JUNE 7, 1952 – JANUARY 20, 2012

ABBEVILLE, SC – Michael Alvin Jones, age 59, resident of 150 Monterey Road, passed away on Friday, January 20, 2012, at his home surrounded by family.

Born June 7, 1952, in Greenville, he was the son of Imogene Moore Jones and the late Alvin ‘Red’ Jones.  A graduate of Calhoun Falls High School and Piedmont Technical College, Mr. Jones was employed by Michelin Retread Technologies as a Project Coordinator. Additionally, he retired after twenty-five years with the United States National Guard. He was a member of Smyrna United Methodist Church in Lowndesville, SC, and was an avid outdoorsman – enjoying bass fishing as well as golfing. 

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Spires Jones, of the home; his mother, Imogene Moore Jones, of Abbeville, SC; two sons: Jeremy Jones & wife, Beth Jones, of Abbeville, SC, and Clay Jones & wife, Brooke Jones, of Taylors, SC; sisters: Diane Waters & husband, Deannie Waters, of Abbeville, SC, and Mary Jane Hanna & husband, Tuck Hanna, of Abbeville, SC.  He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren: Riley & Reese Jones.

The Funeral Service will be held at 3pm on Monday, January 23, 2012, at Smyrna United Methodist Church, Lowndesville, SC, conducted by the Reverend Scotty Willoughby, the Reverend Eric Shepard, and the Reverend Curt Hanna. Interment with military honors will follow in the Smyrna Cemetery.

WILLIAM C. EVANS

MAY 22, 1933 – JANUARY 20, 2012 

SANDY SPRINGS, SC – William Clayton Evans, age 78, of 6015 Clemson Boulevard, passed away on Friday, January 20, 2012.

Born May 22, 1933, in Fair Play, he was a son of the late Reece Clayton Evans and Nina Maebelle Black Evans. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and retired after twenty-five years from LaFrance Industries. Mr. Evans was an accomplished singer, songwriter, and musician.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Shirley Garland Evans; daughters: Kathy Evans Nimmons and husband, Jimmy, of Pendleton, SC, and Lisa Evans Walters of Sandy Springs, SC; daughter-in-law, Alison Evans of Pendleton, SC; grandchildren: Derek & Amy Nimmons, Morgan Walters, Clayton & Madison Evans; great grandchild, Riley Finn Nimmons; sisters: Frances Kelley of Anderson, SC, and Anna Belle English of Townville, SC; and brothers: Truman Evans of Townville, SC, and Talmadge Evans of Greenville, SC.  He was predeceased by his parents; a son, Steve Clayton Evans; and a brother, Lewis Evans.

JULE L. GREEN

December 21, 1926 - January 19, 2012 

ANDERSON, SC - Jule Ann Lewis Green, age 85, of Anderson, wife of the late Richard Spencer Green, passed away on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio on December 21, 1926, Mrs. Green was the daughter of the late John Lewis and Mary Adger Lewis.  She attended Bowling Green University in Ohio and moved to Anderson, SC in 1969.  She worked for Cochran Jewelers and was an avid bridge player.  Mrs. Green was a loving mother and wonderful grandmother.

Survivors include her daughters; Lynda Green and her partner, Rosalie Mitchell of Orlando, FL, Cathy Tate and her husband, John and Debbie Adams and her husband Dennis, all of Anderson; six grandchildren; Spencer Brewster and his wife, Amy, Mary Alice Eames, Aprile Adams and George Tenney, Jonathan Tate, Alan Adams and his wife, Merebeth and Matt Tate; one great-grandchild.  She also leaves behind her beloved cat “Buttercup”.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a son, Rick Green and a brother, Jack Lewis.

The Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, January 22, 2012 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Chaplain Marilyn E. Krebs officiating.  Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

WILFRED BURDETTE  

June 14, 1937 – January 17, 2012

ANDERSON, SC - Wilfred “Skeet” Burdette, age 74, husband of Sue Holmes Burdette, passed away on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Abbeville County, SC on June 14, 1937, Mr. Burdette was a son of the late Mary Lucille Burdette Green.  He formerly worked at Daniels Construction Company and retired from Duke Power Company with 25 years of service.  He resided in Lincolnton, NC for 27 years and moved to Anderson, SC in 2009.  He attended Tabernacle of the Lord in Townville.

Survivors include his wife of the home; son, Benji Burdette and his wife, Geneva of Maiden, NC; daughter, Robbie Sue Anton and her husband, Michael of Anderson; brothers, Bud Owenby and his wife, Brenda of Anderson, and Jimmy Green and his wife, Lynn of Williamston; sisters, Betty Jean Alewine and her husband, Terry and Judy Dunn and her husband, Ralph, all of Belton; six grandchildren, Suzannah Whitfield and her husband, John of Anderson, Amber Queen and her husband, Matt of Shelby, NC, Rebekah Figuried and her husband, Jesse of Townville, Jonathon Anton, serving in the United States Marine Corps, Mary Anton of Denver, NC and Shane Burdette of Lincolnton, NC and six great-grandchildren. 

A Service honoring the life of Mr. Burdette will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2012 at 2:00 pm at The Tabernacle of the Lord in Townville with Reverends Luke Gibson, Kenneth Upchurch and Mark Osborne officiating. 

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends immediately following the memorial service.
