WILBUR E. STRICKLAND

July 23, 1917 – March 28, 2012

ANDERSON, SC - Wilbur Edwin Strickland, husband of the late Dorothy Stoddard  Strickland, of 421 Tanglewood Drive, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2012, at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Belton, Wilbur was the son of the late Ethel McKee Strickland and Fred Strickland.  He
worked in textiles for over 40 years and was an avid gardener.  He was a member of North Anderson Baptist Church.  

Surviving are a son, Keith Strickland; daughter-in-law, Jerie Strickland; grandchildren, Steve Strickland and his wife, Jill, and their daughter, Rebecca, all of Anderson.

He was preceded in death by a son, Wilbur Eugene Strickland; a sister, Margaret S. Walker, and a grandson, Jason Strickland.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, April, 1, 2012, at 2:00 pm in the Chapel at The McDougald Funeral Home, officiated by the Reverend Bill Rigby.  Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home Sunday, April 1, 2012, from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm prior to the service.

DONNIE FROST

December 7, 1943 – March 29, 2012

ANDERSON, SC - Donald “Donnie” Stanley Frost, Sr., age 68, beloved husband, father, brother, granddaddy, and great-granddaddy, was received up into the arms of Christ on Thursday, March 29, 2012.  He fought a good fight and kept the faith.

He was a giant of a man and also a big man with big shoes to fill.  He loved his Savior first of all and praised God for daily blessings. He walked his talk.  His wife, Jean, let him know how blessed she was to have him.  His sons let him know how thankful they were for his being a father to them. He enjoyed his grandchildren’s accomplishments and was glad to hold his great grandchildren in his arms and tell them of his love for them.

He worked for Parnell-Martin Plumbing Supply with 20 years of service, and was a member of the River of Life Church of God.

Surviving are his wife, Odessa Jean Baker Frost, of the home; sons, Stanley Frost, Jr., and his wife, Donna, of Belton, Phillip Trotter and his wife, Cathy, of Westminster, Stephen Frost and his wife, Kelley, of Anderson and Jack Frost and his wife, Nickie, of Iva; 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his mother, Evelyn Frost Bumgardner and brother, Bobby Dale Bumgardner.

We celebrate his home going, Sunday, April 1, 2012, at River of Life Church of God, at 4:00 pm,
officiated by the Reverends Ken Anderson and Kevin Jones. Interment will follow at New Silver Brook Cemetery.

The family will be at the residence, 205 Cloverdale Drive, and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home Saturday, March 31, 2012 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Mr. Frost will be place in the church on Sunday at 3:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Smokey Mountain Home for Children, 449 McCarn Circle, Sevierville, TN 37862.

L. O. "RED" HOLDEN

ANDERSON - Lawrence O'Ryan Holden, 87, of Anderson, husband of Jimmie McCollum Holden, died March 29, 2012 at his residence.

Born June 23, 1924 in Anderson, he was the son of the late James T. and Mettie Graham Holden. Mr. Holden was a U.S. Army Veteran having served in the 187th Infantry Division during WWII. He was a retired salesman and member of River of Life Church of God.

Surviving are his wife, Jimmie Holden of the home; 2 daughters, Gloria Parker and her husband, Wilbur of Summerville and Kathy Whitley and her husband, Lonnie; son, David L. Holden and his wife, Paula; stepdaughter, Michele Gentry and her husband, Michael; stepson, Eric Simpson and his wife, Tracy; 2 grandchildren, Graham and Drew  Whitley; step grandson, Rusty Simpson and his wife, Jessica; 2 sisters, Rachel Holden and Ann Holden; brother, Rudolph Holden all of Anderson and several nieces and nephews of Tennessee. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ester MacDonald.

Funeral service will be held at 4pm Saturday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel with Pastor Kevin Jones officiating. The family will receive friends from 3 until 4pm prior to the service at the Northeast Chapel, 3205 N. Hwy 81. Burial will take place at 10am Monday at M.J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery.

The family is at the residence.

BARRY BISHOP

December 26, 1940 – March 28, 2012

ABBEVILLE, SC - Barry “B.B.” Simpson Bishop, age 71, husband of Marilyn Jeanette McGarity Bishop, of 256 Purdy Road, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2012, at his residence.

Born in Greenville, SC, Barry was the son of the late Simpson George Bishop and Ruth Bishop. He retired as a truck driver.  He was a member of Carswell Baptist Church.

He is survived by a son, Barry D. Bishop and his wife, Cindy of Greer; a sister, Elizabeth Anne Bishop Swords and her husband, Nelson of Williamston; a nephew, Boyd McGarity, raised in the home; brothers-in-law, Jimmy McGarity and Jerry McGarity, both of Iva; 6 grandsons; 2 great-grandchildren.

Barry was preceded in death by a daughter, Tammy Bishop Geddings and a son, David Simpson Bishop.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 31, 2012, at  2:00 pm at Carswell Baptist Church , with the Reverends James Bannister and Hudson White officiating.  Burial of his ashes will follow at the Carswell Baptist church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church Saturday from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm prior to the service.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Carswell Baptist Church Senior Class, 4301 Flat Rock Road, Iva, SC 29655.

LEONARD E. SEIGLER

August 30, 1925 – March 27, 2012

IVA, SC - Leonard “Shorty” Everett Seigler, age 86, husband of the late Alva Louise Kelley Seigler, passed away Tuesday, March 27, 2012, at his residence. 

Born in Anderson County, “Shorty” was the son of the late “T. E.” Seigler and Bessie Thornton Seigler.  After graduating from Iva High School, he served in World War II while in the US Navy.  He worked for many years with the Daniel Construction Company as a pipefitter and was an avid cattle farmer.  He was a member of the American Legion, and loved the fellowship, fun, and dancing with everyone at the Lowndesville Community Dance Association.  He was a member of Union Baptist Church.

He is survived by a daughter, Sharon S. Mauldin of Iva; granddaughter, Sherry “Berry” Mauldin, and his special sweetheart, Peggy Bridgman.

He was preceded in death by his wife and parents; brother, Thomas Seigler; sisters, Amelia Bolt, Ophelia Metz, and infant sister, Sara Seigler; and a son-in-law, Joe Berry Mauldin.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, March 29, 2012, at 4:00 pm at the Iva City Cemetery with the Reverend Mike McMillion officiating.  

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home Thursday, March 29, 2012, from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm.

MAX E. ASHLEY

February 19, 1922 – March 27, 2012 

IVA, SC - Max Edward Ashley, age 90, husband of Vera Mae Hayes Ashley, of 9535 Highway 81 South, passed away Tuesday, March 27, 2012, at Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Abbeville County, Max was the son of the late Daisy Moore Ashley and the late Lewis S. Ashley and his wife, the late Rosa Lee Woodruff Ashley.  He served in World War II as a 1st Sergeant in the 52nd Field Artillery Company and had worked in the textile industry at Jackson Mill for over 30 years.

He was a member of the Iva Pentecostal Church where he served as a Sunday school superintendent and was a member of the Willing Workers Class.

Surviving are his widow of 70 years, Vera Mae Hayes Ashley; one grandson, Max Lamar Ashley, Jr.; 2 great grandsons, Randy Ashley (Molly) of West Virginia and Ryan Ashley of Iva who were both raised in the home;  a sister, Mildred Graham (Roy) of Anderson; 1 great granddaughter, Jaiden; and 2 great-great- grandchildren, Axl and Jacob.

Max was preceded in death by a son, Max Lamar Ashley, a daughter, Joyce Maxine Ashley, a granddaughter, Melinda Ashley, 8 brothers, and 4 sisters. 

Funeral Services will be held Friday, March 30, 2012, at 3:00 pm, at Iva Pentecostal Holiness Church, officiated by the Reverend Billy Pinson.  Burial will follow in Iva City Cemetery.

The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at the church Friday, March 30, 2012, from 1:30 pm until 3:00 pm, prior to the funeral service.

FOREST D. GLENN

August 27, 1936 – March 27, 2012

TOWNVILLE, SC - Forest Daidair Glenn, age 75, husband of the late Mary Lee Sammons Glenn, of 115 B Rodgers Farm Road, passed away Tuesday, March 27, 2012, at the Cottingham Hospice House of Seneca.

Born in Hart County, GA, Forest was the son of the late William Boyd Glenn and Bessie Mae Sammons Glenn.  He worked for Orr Lyon Mills for 30 years and was an avid fisherman and enjoyed playing blue grass music.

He is survived by sons, Roger Dale Glenn and Brian K. Glenn, both of Townville; daughter, Cynthia G. Bunnell of Irmo; 5 grandchildren, Terry Harris, Andrew Bunnell, Dusty Hubbard, Kelsey Glenn, and Trenton Glenn; brother, Jimmy Ray Glenn of Townville; sister, Julie Ann Richardson of Canon, GA.

Forest was predeceased by his wife, parents, a son, Ryan Dean Glenn, 7 brothers, and 3 sisters.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, March 29, 2012, at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by the Reverend David Blizzard.  Burial will follow in the Beaverdam Baptist Church Cemetery in Fairplay, SC.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 28, 2012, from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at The McDougald Funeral Home.

EDD MITCHELL

August 18, 1921 – March 26, 2012

ROYSTON, GA - Edwin Bryson Mitchell, Sr., age 90, of 48 Woodland Manor Street, and husband of Mary Evelyn Durham Mitchell passed away on March 26, 2012, at St. Mary’s Hospice House in Bogart, GA.

Born in Comer, GA, Edd was a son of the late Will R. Mitchell and Lillis Moss Mitchell.  He proudly served his country in the US Army during WWII stationed in Germany as a sharpshooter.  He retired as the owner of Mitchell’s Auto Service in Starr, SC.  He was a Mason, active in Hiram Lodge, an avid gardener, pecan cracker, and enjoyed life always keeping busy by helping others.  He was a faithful member of Starr Baptist Church. 

He is predeceased by his parents and children, Gloria June Hart, Teddy Wayne Mitchell, Bryson Mitchell, and Patricia Adamson.

Edd is survived by his wife of 65 years; son, Aubrey Mitchell, of Commerce, GA; daughter, Shirley O’Neal Stanley of Anderson; a brother, Darrell Mitchell of Starr; 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, March 29, 2012, at 11:00 am in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by the Reverends Jerry Durham and Jerry Gray.  Burial will follow in the Iva City Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Upstate Veterans Honor Guard. 

The family is at the residence and will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, March 28, 2012, from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm.

ROMOLA BRYSOIN

Romola Collins Bryson of Kings Road, Anderson, died on Sunday, March 25, 2012 at the AnMed Health Medical Center.  Born in Hoschton, GA, she was the daughter of the late Rev. E.B. Collins and the late Annie Bell Crus Collins.  She was a member of the Forest Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband Melvin T. Bryson of the home; sons: Dr. Don Bryson (Janie) of Oil Springs, KY, Dr. Alan Bryson of Anderson, Nathan Bryson (Beth) of Rome, GA, Dr. Jerry Davis (Shirley) of Point Lookout, MO, and Jim Davis (Judy) of Conyers, GA.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a son, Dan Davis, and a brother, E.B. Collins, Jr.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, March 28, 2012, at 2 PM, at the M J Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery, with Rev. Dean Weaver officiating.  The family will receive friends following the service.

Ruth Elizabeth Meltzer

July 2, 1920 – March 24, 2012

Ruth Elizabeth Meltzer, age 91 of Anderson, passed away peacefully at the Rainey Hospice House.  She was born on July 2, 1920, in Hartford, CT. She was a graduate of the Mount St. Joseph’s Academy in Hartford, and attended the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY.  Ruth also studied nursing at the Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.  In 1942, Ruth married the love of her life, Gilbert Meltzer.  After Gil’s service in World War II, they returned to his hometown of Elmira, NY, where they made their home for the next 40 years. Gil and Ruth continued the family business, a women’s ready-to-wear clothing store called The Lovely Shop. Ruth also attended and graduated from Elmira College.

She also worked for the New York Welfare Department and taught sixth grade in the Elmira public schools.  However, Ruth’s main focus was always her husband Gil and children,  David and Susan.  Upon retirement, Ruth and Gil moved to Sarasota, FL, and later to Dallas, TX.  Following the death of Gil in 2004, after 61 years of marriage, Ruth moved to Anderson, SC.  In 2005, at age 84, she joined the Rotary Club of Greater Anderson, making her the oldest new member of that organization.  She had a great love and appreciation for musicals, both cinematic and live theater. A consummate optimist, she especially loved uplifting themes and music, and demonstrated to all who knew her how to age with grace and class. 

Those left to carry on the legacy of Ruth Meltzer include her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. David W. Meltzer of Dallas, TX; her daughter, Susan Meltzer Tuten and son-in-law Dr. Thomas U. Tuten of Anderson, SC;  six grandchildren, Dr. Robert H. Meltzer, Dr. Amanda Meltzer Rush, Sarah Meltzer Wandrey, Esq., Dr. T. Alexander Tuten, Dr. Jane Tuten Ware, and Caroline Amelia Tuten; and 6 great-grandchildren. The family appreciates the love and attention given by her friend and caregiver Shirley Brown over the past four and a half years. 

A reception honoring and celebrating the life of Ruth Meltzer will be held Thursday evening, March 29, 2012, from 6 PM until 8 PM, at The McDougald Family Center.   

Memorial contributions in memory of Ruth may be made to the Cancer Association of Anderson Sustainability Fund, 215 E. Calhoun Street, Anderson, SC 29621.

WILLIE MAE KELLEY

June 23, 1913 – March 25, 2012

IVA, SC - Willie Mae Yeargin Kelley, age 98, widow of the late Eugene “Gene” Kelley, passed away Sunday, March 25, 2012, at her residence.

Born in Anderson County, Willie Mae was the daughter of the late George Yeargin and Susie Moore Yeargin.  At the age of 14, she went to work at Jackson Mill and was employed there for 39 years. She retired from Anderson School District Three in food service after 14 years of service.  She was a faithful member of the Fellowship Wesleyan Church.

She was predeceased by her husband, parents, 2 brothers, Alfred and Grady Yeargin, and a sister, Eva Bannister.

She is survived by her sons, Donald Eugene Kelley and his wife, Josephine, and Everette Dwain Kelley and his wife, Ann, all of Iva; brothers, Bruce Yeargin and Joe Frank Yeargin, both of Greenwood; sisters, Mary Long, of Ware Shoals and Mozelle Saxon, of Starr; grandchildren, Tim Kelley, Kim Kelley, Tommy Kelley, Tracy Williams, and Nicole Kelley; great-grandchildren, Megan, Makayla, Torry, Bryce, and Layne; and one great-great-grandson, Wyatt. 

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, March 28, 2012, at 3:30 pm at Fellowship Wesleyan Church, officiated by the Reverends George Brassard, Ron Hamilton, and Stephen Love. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. 

The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home Tuesday, March 27, 2012, from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

The family will be at the home of Donnie and Josephine Kelley, 1120 Barnes Station Road, Iva.

DOROTHY W. GRAHAM

ANDERSON- Dorothy Willamette Graham, 90, of Anderson Place, died Sunday, March 25, 2012.

Born January 4, 1922 in Columbus, Ohio she was the daughter of the late Lonnie and Gertrude Simmons.

She is survived by her children, Greg, Larry, & Steve vonSeeger and Diana vonSeeger and their families.
