MAMIE WELBORN ABERNATHY

PENSACOLA, FL - Mamie Griffin Welborn Abernathy, of Pensacola, FL., died Monday, July 16, 2012 at Azalea Trace Assisted Living in Pensacola.

Born in Americus, GA., she was the daughter of the late Walter and Stella Thompson Griffin. She lived much of her adult life in Anderson County and was a graduate of Anderson High School.  She was a partner and chief financial officer of Welborn Chevrolet in Honea Path and Welborn Tire Service in Anderson from 1952-1973 with her first husband, W. Keys Welborn. Following the death of Mr. Welborn, she married Ralph Abernathy in 1973 and moved to St. Simon’s Island, GA where she was active in many civic affairs. After the death of Mr. Abernathy, she moved to Pensacola in 1990. She was a member of the D.A.R. and First Presbyterian Church, Pensacola, FL.

Survivors include two sons, W. Gerald Wellborn (Dr. Georgia Lou Welborn) of Anderson and John M. Welborn of Rome, GA; one daughter, Barbara W. Ellison (Fred Ellison) of St. Johns, FL; nine grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two husbands, two grandsons, four sisters and one brother.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 2012 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Anderson. The .family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service. The family is at the home of Gerald and Dr. Georgia Lou Welborn, 1604 North Boulevard, Anderson

RHETT COGBURN O’NEAL

May 2, 1928 – July 14, 2012

Mrs. Rhett Cogburn O’Neal, age 84, of 210 O’Neal Drive, went to her eternal home to be with her Lord on Saturday, July 14, 2012.  She died peacefully and with so much grace at NHC Health Care of Anderson surrounded by the love of her children, brothers, sisters, and grandchildren.  For 62 years, she was married to her devoted husband, Rudolph “Rudy” McClure O’Neal, Sr., until his death in 2009.  Born in Edgefield, SC, she was a daughter of the late John Stephen Cogburn and the late Hattie Lou Logue Cogburn.

Mrs. O’Neal was one of ten children.  Her passion in life was her faith in Jesus Christ and her family.  She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother.  Mrs. O’Neal was a member of First Baptist Church of Anderson.  She was graduate of Edgefield High School and later attended Anderson Hospital School of Nursing.

Left to carry on the legacy of Rhett O’Neal are her sons, Rudolph McClure “Mac” O’Neal and his wife, Nancy of Belton, Daniel Cogburn O’Neal and his wife, Lynn of Spartanburg, David Shaun O’Neal and his wife, Lee of Lincolnton, NC; daughters, Pamela Jo O’Neal and her husband, Mo M’Rabet of West Palm Beach, FL and Paula O’Neal Adank and her husband, Jacob of Anderson; a brother, Ike Cogburn and his wife, Francis of Columbia; sisters, Joan Nobles of Toccoa, GA, Helen Hare of Edgefield and Rebecca James of Greenville; and a sister-in-law, Othello Cogburn of Edgefield. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Rudy and her parents, Mrs. O’Neal was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia O’Neal Traynum; brothers, John, Avery, and Ben Cogburn; and sisters, Sue Cogburn and Ruby Mae Timmerman.

A Funeral Service celebrating the life of Mrs. Rhett O’Neal will be held on Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at 2 PM at the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with the Reverend Dr. James R. Thomason officiating.  Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial 1:30 PM.  Following the service of celebration, the family will be at the family home place, 210 O’Neal Drive.

JOHN LOUDERMILK

ANDERSON – John Robert Loudermilk, 60, of 102 Oxford Drive, husband of Tammy Loudermilk, passed away Sunday, July 15, 2012 at his residence.
Born April 24, 1952, in Anderson, he was the son of Selena Buchanan Gosnell and the late Herbert Lovess Loudermilk. He served his country in Vietnam in the U. S. Army. Later, John was a quality auditor with Electrolux Major Appliances and a member of Covenant Baptist Church. 
Surviving are his wife, Tammy Nichols Loudermilk; daughter, Amy Suzanne Lollis; 2 sons, Brandon Lee Loudermilk and Jonathan Taylor Loudermilk, all of Anderson; 2 grandchildren, Emma Ashlan Lollis and Aspen Marley Strickland; mother, Selena Gosnell of Iva; brothers and sisters, Glenn Hagood, Robin Deitz, Kim Evans, Marsena Hawkins, Sandra Gosnell, Steve Gunnels, Ken Gunnels and Gene Gunnels. In addition to his father, John was preceded in death by his sister, Jan Carroll.
Funeral service will be held at 4pm Tuesday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel with Rev. Steve Silvey officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Monday from 6 until 8pm at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel.

THOMAS K. BURRISS

ANDERSON – Thomas Kennon Burriss, 89, of 1723 Gerrard Drive, widower of Kathryn Lawson Burriss, passed away Saturday, July 14, 2012 at his residence.
Born June 23, 1923 in Anderson, he was the son of the late Louie Kennon and Etta Whitfield Burriss. Tom was a U.S. Army Air Force Veteran and a retired Industrial Engineer with the Singer Company. He was a member of Salem Baptist Church.
Surviving are his son, Thomas Michael Burriss and his wife, Patti and daughter, Ann B. Osborne all of Anderson; 3 grandchildren, Carol Burriss Madden, Patricia Burriss Kyger and Timothy M. Burriss and 6 great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 4pm Monday at Salem Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Jim Frost officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Campbell Patriots Honor Guard. The family is at the residence.

JIM SHIRLEY

January 29, 1941 – July 13, 2012

Mr. James A. “Hot Dog” Shirley, age 71,  departed his earthly home for a heavenly home on July 13, 2012 at AnMed Health Care Center.

Mr. Shirley is survived by his wife of 48 years, Betty W. Shirley, of the home; his son, James C. “Chris” Shirley and his wife Khristy of Anderson and two beautiful granddaughters, Erica Dawn Shirley and Hannah Christine Shirley. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, William Hanvey, niece Margaret Brady and her husband Chris and their children Blake and Marissa Brady. 

After graduating from Boys High in 1959, he served our beloved country in the U.S. Army.  He worked for many years at Dexter Grocery Company and Seabrook.  He retired with the rank of Lieutenant from the Anderson City Fire Department in 2000, with twenty-seven years of service as well as three years of service to the Broadway Volunteer Fire Department.  During his many years of work as a fireman and as a professional painter, he made many wonderful loving friends with whom he still kept in contact.  He was a devout Christian and faithful member of River Street Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, trustee, and groundskeeper for thirty-seven years.

Jim was predeceased by a sister, Betty Hanvey, his parents, James L. “Luke” Shirley and Mattie Lou Stewart Shirley and many beloved aunts and uncles.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 15, 2012, from 6 PM until 8:30 PM at The McDougald Funeral Home.   Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Monday, July 16, 2012 at River Street Baptist Church officiated by the Reverend Dr. Ron Fousek and the Reverend Roger Porter.  Interment will follow at M. J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery with military honors.

Flowers will be accepted and memorials may be made to River Street Baptist Church, 708 East River Street, Anderson, SC, 29624.

The family is at the home of his son, Chris Shirley, 1502 Babb Street, Anderson.

GORDON KNIGHT

PENDLETON- Wade Gordon Knight, Jr., 70, of 304 Westinghouse Rd., widower of the late Peggy Ramseur Knight, died Wednesday July 11, 2012 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born October 2, 1941 in Lancaster, he was the son of Alice Patterson Knight and the late Wade Knight, Sr. He served in the US Air Force, OSI Intelligence Division. Mr. Knight was a graduate of Greer High School and the University of South Carolina. After graduating form Southeastern Theological Seminary he became an ordained Minister. He worked at both the College of Charleston and The Citadel and was the Vice President of Business Affairs at Anderson University. He was a self-employed CPA.

Surviving are his sons: Russell Knight of Lyman, Tim Swingle of Pendleton, daughters: Sonya K. Byrd of Greenville and Donna Mangubat of Norfolk, VA, six grandchildren, mother, Alice P. Knight and brother, Lawrence Knight.

Funeral services will be held at 5:30 PM Sunday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel with Rev. Barry Davis officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:30PM until 5:30PM at the mortuary prior to the service. The family is at the residence.

MRS. GENEVA “Gigi” LEVERETTE ALLEN

December 6, 1921 – July 6, 2012

ANDERSON, SC - Mrs. Geneva “Gigi” Leverette Allen, age 90, of 500 Concord Road, #B-5, Anderson, died on July 6, 2012 at the Rainey Hospice House.  Born in Anderson, she was a daughter of the late Almond O. Leverette and the late Della Cleveland Leverette.  She was married for forty-six years to the late Milford “Nick” Allen, who died in 1992.

Mrs. Allen was a dedicated member of the Orrville Baptist Church where she was a member of the Ruth Sunday School Class.  Having a career in childcare, she taught many children at Boulevard Baptist Church and Southside Baptist Church day school programs and was affectionately known as “Miss Gigi”.  All of her life, she loved gardening, going to the beach, traveling, and walking. She was also an avid Gamecock fan.   Geneva was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, neighbor and friend.  

Left to carry on Mrs. Allen’s legacy are a son, Chuck Allen and his wife, Sharon, of Anderson; 2 daughters, Peggy Allen Mason and Vicki Allen Jones, both of Columbia; 2 sisters, Pat Ozmint and her husband, Ed, of Anderson, and Sue Scott of Bennettsville, SC; 5 grandchildren, Rhett Wehunt and his wife, Lisa, and Blake Wehunt, both of Lexington, SC, Josh Allen and his wife Taylor, Miranda Allen and Callie Allen, all of Anderson; and great-grandchild, Jordan Wehunt of Lexington, SC.

In addition to her husband and parents, those who preceded her in death include her brothers, Al Leverette, Jr. and Bobby Joe Leverette and a sister, Doris Ramsey. 

A service celebrating the life of Mrs. Allen will be held on Monday, July 9, 2012 at 3:00 pm in  the Chapel of  The McDougald Funeral Home with the Reverend Dr. Wendell Bannister officiating.  Interment will follow at New Silver Brook Cemetery.   

The family will be at the home of Chuck and Sharon Allen, 112 Graylyn Court, Anderson, and will receive friends  Monday from 1:00 pm until 2:30 pm at the funeral home. 

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the caregivers at No Place Like Home, the medical staff of NHC, AnMed Health, and Rainey Hospice House for their loving care.  The family would also like to thank Pastor Wendell Bannister for all his faithful visits and prayers.

TOM STRALL 

ANDERSON - Thomas Joseph Strall, 76, of Spring Brook Subdivision, died Wednesday, July 4, 2012 at his residence.

Born March 28, 1936 in Toledo, Ohio, he was the son of the late C.J. and Wilma Tillman Strall. He served in the U.S. Army and attended Toledo University. Mr. Strall was a Hospital Administrator at St. Vincent Hospital, Toledo, Ohio and later was operations manager at Anderson Mall. He was a member of Anderson Elks Lodge #1206 where he had served as Exalted Ruler and Esteemed Leading Knight. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, 3rd degree. 

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Johnson Strall of the home; three sons, Thomas J. Strall, II and wife, Cheryl of Monroe, LA, Scott E. Strall of Michigan, and J. Kyle Sander and wife, Tracy of Townville; three daughters, Sarah E. Davis of Anderson, Theresa J. Perkins and husband, “Cap’, of Iva, and Kimberly F. Harper and husband, Wayne of Belton; six grandchildren; one great grandson; two sisters, Mary Weber of Toledo, Ohio and Joan Reichert of Oregon, Ohio; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, F. Mike Strall.

The Funeral Mass celebrating the life of Tom Strall will be held at 12 Noon Monday, July 9, 2012 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Aubrey McNeil, OFM and Brother Henry Fulmer, OFM officiating. Burial will follow in M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery with military honors provided by the Campbell Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11:30 a.m. Monday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson. The family is at the residence.

FRANCES I. PERRY

ANDERSON - Frances Ivester Perry, 91, widow of Raymond Ayers Perry passed away on Friday, June 29, 2012.

Born in Greer, SC, she was the daughter of the late William Lester Ivester, Sr. and the late Maggie Mullinax Ivester. She was a member of Marshall Memorial United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. Frances retired from Anderson Memorial Hospital as a personnel secretary.

Surviving are daughters, Donna Newell and her husband, Jimmy and Susan Winstead and her husband, Rick all of Anderson; grandchildren, Cayce Crenshaw of Elon, NC, Erin Winstead Sumter and her husband, Jody and Tyler Winstead all of Anderson; great grandchildren, Preston and Brynsley Sumter of Anderson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by infant sons, Donnie and Ronnie Perry; brothers, Ernest, Roy and William Lester, Jr. Ivester and a sister, Margaret McGill.

Graveside services will be held at 10am Monday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with Rev. Jimmy Dillard officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

The family is at the home of her granddaughter, Erin Sumter, 4024 Brackenberry Drive.

LOUISE "PEE WEE" GRAY

ANDERSON - Hallie Louise "Pee Wee" Grant Gray, 81, of Anderson, widow of Joseph L. Gray, died Saturday, June 23, 2012 at her residence.

Born February 27, 1931 in Clinton, she was the daughter of the late Dewey and Katie Grant. She was a retired employee of Clark Schwebel Fiberglass. She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include two daughters-in-law, Diane Gray and Patricia Gray of Anderson; four grandchildren, Sheila Gray Gurley, Lisa Gray Adams, Barry Gray, and Christie Gray McJunkin; one step-grandson, Eric Taylor; seven great grandchildren; one sister, Betty McEwen of Astor, FL; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Joe V. Gray and Mike Gray, one brother and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel. Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 3 until 4 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson. The family is at the home of Diane Gray, 213 Pine Grove Road, Anderson.

STAN QUEEN

August 12, 1964 – June 22, 2012

ANDERSON, SC - Stanley Keith Queen, 47, of 2503 Neville Way, husband of Lisa Burton Queen, passed away on Friday, June 22, 2012 at home surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Anderson, he was a son of Linda Buffington Queen of Anderson and the late Donnie Cullen Queen. Stanley attended McDuffie High School and was a sheet metal foreman with Bahnson.

In addition to his wife, Lisa, he is survived by his mother, Linda Queen; his daughters, Jessica Strickland and her husband D.J. of Anderson and Heather Scott and her husband Joshua of Honea Path; brother, Greg Queen of Anderson; and grandchildren, Brendan and Ella Strickland and Cooper Scott.

A Memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 24 at 3:00pm at Gethsemane Baptist Temple with Reverend Sam Duncan officiating.  Stan will be cremated following the funeral service and later the family will place some of his ashes with his Harley.

The family will be at the home and will receive friends Sunday at the church from 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm.

LAFAUN JONES

September 23, 1921 – June 22, 2012

Iva, SC – LaFaun E. Jones, age 90, of 4348 Trail Road, passed into her Heavenly Home on Friday, June 22, 2012 at the Hospice House.  

Born In Ida, OK, she was a daughter of the late Carby Pope and Iva Pope.  She was the widow of the late Lloyd Bradshaw and the Late Arthur Jones.  Mrs. Jones was a member of Jones Chapel Church of God of Prophecy in Belton, SC.

Survivors include her daughter, Donna Heaton of Iva; sons, Richard Bradshaw of Iva and Dennis Bradshaw of Roseburg, OR; granddaughters, Kris Schoepf of CA, Rachel Bartlett of CA and Sarah Fisher of CO; great-grandchildren, Shawn, Tyler, Cory, Victoria, Alex, Isaac, Muk, Mimi, Shane, and Mathias; great-great grandson, Keegan; brother, Gene Pope and his wife Phyllis of Seneca, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews.  All of whom she so loved and prayed for.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was predeceased by brothers, Reg, Cec, and Arthur Pope.
