JAMES MICHAEL HEFNER

JULY 8, 1948 – JUNE 8, 2013

ANDERSON, SC - James Michael Hefner, age 64, husband of Joann Campbell Hefner, passed away on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Ravenna, OH, he was the son of the late James Hefner and the late Betty Pressdee Butler.  Mr. Hefner served in the United State Army during the Vietnam War.  He moved his family to Florida where they lived for 30 years, first in Pensacola and then to the east coast in Palm Beach County,  then they  moved to Anderson in 2006.  He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a member of the American Legions.

He is survived by his wife and their children; Donna Lynn Hefner of Vineland, NJ; Richard Hefner and his wife, Jennifer of Granite Falls, NC; Michael Hefner and his wife, Michele of Howell, NJ; Kristen Franqui and her husband, Jason of Port Saint Lucie, FL; Laura Hetzler and her husband, Robert of Pendleton, SC; brother, Edward Hefner and his wife, Mary of Akron, OH; grandchildren, Jimmy, Sean, Stephen, Jeremy, Ciara, Michael, Colby, Matthew and Dayton; mother-in-law; Dorothy Campbell; sister-in-law, Laura Campbell; several nieces and nephews and cousins. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son; James Hefner; sister, Nancy Patterson.

The Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at 11:00 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Ignatius Smith and Brother Henry Fulmer officiating.  The family is at their respective homes and will receive friends on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the funeral home. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wounded Warriors Foundation, 2 Traymore Place, Bluffton, SC 29910.

WOODROW WILSON HANKS, SR.

DECEMBER 10, 1919 – JUNE 8, 2013

ANDERSON, SC - Woodrow “ Will” Wilson Hanks, Sr., age 93, husband of the late Evelyn Grace McMains Hanks, passed away on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at the Rainey Hospice House. 

Born in Anderson, SC he was the son to the late Steven Hanks and the late Bessie Herron Hanks. He served with the Marines during World War II.  Mr. Hanks was retired from the CIA.  

He is survived by his children; sons, Stephan Hanks and his wife, Donna of Gretna, VA, Woodrow Hanks, Jr. of Anderson, SC; daughters, Anna Hammer of Jacksonville, FL, Nancy Herman of Fort Lauderdale, FL; nine grandchildren and five great- grandchildren. 

 In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers; Harold, Todd, Tilman, and William Hanks; sisters, Bessie Hanks, Laura Bryant and Sara Hanks.

A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at 2:00 pm, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral.  Interment will be in Fort Lincoln Cemetery, in Brentwood, MD on Friday, June 14, 2013.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the funeral home.

RICHARD HENRY NORTH

March 20, 1952 – June 4, 2013 

ANDERSON, SC - Richard Henry North, age 61, of Anderson, passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at the Rainey Hospice House. 

Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of Grace Lawson North of Philadelphia, PA and the late Gerald North.  He was a graduate of North East High School, Philadelphia, PA, Class of 1969.  Richard attended the University of Missouri at Rolla. He enjoyed his career, especially his customers, in food service, working for 18 years at Shoney’s Inc. where he was the Regional Director and 17 years with Pitt Grill, Inc. where he was the General Manager.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his loving wife, Marsha Maddux North, of the home; his children, Kristie Middleton, Garin North, Brandon North and his wife Gwinn; and Meagan Oncale and her husband Joel; a brother, Douglas North and his wife Sue; two sisters, Nancy De Cristofaro and her husband John and Sandra Sitarski and her husband Ray; and six grandchildren, Sydney and Rebecca Middleton, Katy, Ethan and Trinity Oncale and Behr North. 

The Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 3:30 PM in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Reverend Jerry Nation officiating.  The family will gather for a time of visitation following the service at the McDougald Family Center.

OSCAR AYERS, JR.

JANUARY 2, 1943 – JUNE 9, 2013

ANDERSON, SC - Oscar Vernal Ayers, Jr., age 70, husband of the late Zoah Burdette Ayers, passed away on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at his residence. 

Born in Green Mountain, NC he was the son of the late Oscar Vernal Ayers, Sr. and the late Rosie Marie Rice Ayers.  Mr. Ayers was the founder & owner of A & A Machining Service.

He was a member of North Anderson Pentecostal Holiness Church. 

He is survived by his children; daughters,  Tammy Ayers Padgett and her husband, James of Anderson, SC, Susie Ayers Spainhour and her husband, Robert of Anderson, SC; son, William Vernal Ayers, and his wife, Dawn of Anderson, SC; brothers, Wilburn Ayers of Cliffside, NC, Lloyd Burdette Ayers of Starr, SC, Johnny Ayers of Johnson City, TN; sisters, Karen Walker of Johnson City, TN, Linda Whitson of Johnson City, TN and Renee Oliver of Jonesboro, TN; four grandchildren,  Whitney Ayers, Pasha Spainhour, Kristina Spainhour, Crawford Ayers; special grandchildren, Nancy Whitker and Tracy Kelly; special friend, Ms. Frankie White of Anderson, SC; special “Aunt” Ree Laws of Green Mountain, NC. 

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Gary Ayers and Harold Ayers. 

The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at 12:30 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with the Reverend J. Floyd Stancel Jr. and Reverend Roger Laws officiating.  Interment will follow in South Lawn Memorial Gardens.

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the funeral home.

BERTHA CROMER GUNNELS

WILLIAMSTON - Bertha Cromer Gunnels, 78, of 113 Slawson Drive, died Saturday, June 8, 2013 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born December 7, 1934 in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late Bertram Orr and Sula Boggs Cromer. Mrs. Gunnels was a retired bookkeeper and  a member of Union Grove United Methodist Church. 

Survivors include two daughters, Alice Purdy Faulkenberry and Melissa Gunnels Mullikin and husband, Randy; son, Lawrence Clayton Gunnels, all of Williamston; nine grandchildren, Trina Lindler, Nicole Brown, Jeremy Gunnels, Benjamin Gunnels, Daniel Fowler, Shane Gunnels, Velvet Harrington, Lisa White, and Chris Mullikin; ten great grandchildren; special niece, Sherry Bowen of the home; one sister, Carol Bowen and husband, Jim of Anderson; and four brothers, Orr Cromer and wife, Marion of Spartanburg, Ernest Cromer and wife, Louise of Cottageville, Phillip Cromer and wife, Patricia of Starr, and Stanley Cromer and wife, Ann of Columbia.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Union Grove United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Amy Bratton. The family will receive friends from 4:30 until 6 p.m. Sunday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson. The family is at the residence.

KAREN KUHLMANN

June 21, 1948 – June 4, 2013

ANDERSON, SC - Karen Kay Kuhlmann, age 64, of Anderson, passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Tampa, FL, she was the daughter of the late Walter Kuhlmann and the late Katherine Bradberry.  She worked at Ryan’s Steak House for over 30 years.  She also worked at Anderson Memorial Hospital in the OR. Throughout the years, she helped others as well as was helped herself, through a common bond of Alcoholics Anonymous.  Karen was a member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church. 

She is survived by her step-mother, Inez Kuhlmann; a daughter, Jennifer Campbell (Nick); two grandchildren, Kallie Campbell and Tyler Burriss; a brother, Walt Kuhlmann; two sisters, Ginny Colia (Kenton) and Gloria; two aunts, Gale Griffith and Linda Carson; and a cousin, Brad Smith.

The Memorial service will be held in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home on Friday, June 7, 2013 at 6:00 PM.  The family will gather for a time of visitation following the service.

JUANITA F. GODWIN

September 13, 1920 – June 4, 2013

ANDERSON, SC - Juanita Flowers Godwin, age 92, of Anderson, passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at AnMed Health Medical Center. 

Born in Johnston County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Hillard Thomas Flowers and the late Bertha Virginia Flowers.  She worked in textiles for many years.  She had also worked for JC Penney, where she retired.  Juanita enjoyed traveling with her family.  She was a member of Grace Memorial Baptist Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Shelby Jean Calhoun and her husband Thamer Leonard, of Huntington, WV; a daughter- in-law, JoCarroll Godwin, of Anderson; a sister, Josephine Starling of West Jefferson, NC; 5 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marion Frank Godwin; a son, Homer Franklin Godwin; three brothers, Jesse G. Flowers, H.T. Flowers, Jr., and Gilliam Flowers; and three sisters, Ella Mae Barrett, Mamie Hudgens and Betty Corbin. 

The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, June 7, 2013 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Reverend Mark Dickson officiating.  Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.   

The family will receive friends at the funeral home, prior to the service, on Friday, from 9:30 AM until 11:00 AM.

Kathryn "Mummers" McClain Sorrow

ANDERSON- Kathryn "Mummers" McClain Sorrow, 96, of Anderson, passed away on Thursday, June 6, 2013 at AnMed Health Medical Center surrounded by her family.

Born December 29, 1916 in Anderson, she was the third child of the late C. Earl and Oria Bolt McClain. Mrs. Sorrow retired from BASF in 1986 where she worked in draw twist and warping. She was a lifelong member of New Prospect Baptist Church and the Encouragers Sunday School Class.

She leaves behind her only child, Kathy Sorrow Farmer and her husband, Danny of Anderson; granddaughters: Melissa Farmer Moorhead and husband, John of Hartwell, GA, and Kandice Farmer Hagan and husband, Seth all of Anderson; four great grandchildren: Hannah, Leah, and Lucas Hagan and Libby Moorhead and one great grandchild on the way, Danny Cooper Hagan. She is also survived by her brother, William McClain of Anderson and 3 sisters, Deree Dickerson of Anderson, Selwin Tingen of Piedmont, Oria Balchin and her husband, Tommy of Graham, NC. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Olga Sain and Dorothy Busby and brothers, Calvin, Bevin, George, Robert, and David McClain.

Funeral services will be held at 3 PM, Saturday, June 8, 2013 at New Prospect Baptist Church with Dr. Tony Smith officiating. Burial will be in New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30PM until 2:45 PM prior to the service at the church. The family will be at the residence.

JOE SWAIN

August 12, 1935 – June 4, 2013

ANDERSON, SC - Joe Elwood Swain, age 77, of Anderson, husband of Judy Swain, passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at his residence.  

Born in Southport, NC, he was the son of the late John Swain and Carol Thompson Swain.  He proudly served his country in the United States Army.  He was a plumbing estimator for Easley Mechanical.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Dean Swain and his wife Tricia, of Anderson a brother, John Swain and his wife Pauline of Southport, NC;  a grandson, Ryan Hall and his wife Anna, a granddaughter, Jessie Moore all of Anderson; two great-granddaughters, Olivia and Reese Hall of Anderson; and nephews, Jerry Swain and John Allen Swain of Southport, NC

EARL BROWNING

February 5, 1922 – June 3, 2013

ANDERSON, SC - Clarence Earl Browning, age 91, of Anderson, passed away on Monday, June 3, 2013 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Oconee County, he was the son of the late Martin Luther Browning and the late Sara Elizabeth Rice Browning.  He proudly served his country and retired from the United States Army as Sargent First Class.  Following his retirement he worked for Anderson Armored Car, for many years.  He was a member of Temple Baptist Church. 

He is survived by his daughter, Elaine Lacobie of Anderson; two grandchildren, Jonathan and Phillip Brock; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Sommer Brock; a special friend, Susie West of Anderson; and several nieces and nephews. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dot Wooten Browning; a sister, Sara Browning and four brothers, Ralph, Roy, J.W., and Carlos Browning.

The Funeral service will be held at The McDougald Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at 12:30 PM.  Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.  

The family will be at the home of his niece, Pat Williams, 1405 Hilltop Drive, Anderson, SC 29621 and receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service from 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM.

WILLIAM EUGENE “SHORTY” COLLINS

August 8, 1932 – June 3, 2013

William Eugene “Shorty” Collins, age 80, of 319 Whitehall Road, passed away on Monday, June 3, 2013, at his residence, surrounded by the love of his family.  Born in Walhalla, SC, he was the son of the late Oscar C. Collins and the late Myra Reid Collins.  For over 58 years, he was the loving and devoted husband of Audrey Smith Collins of the home. 

Mr. Collins proudly served his country in the US Army.  He was a retired service supervisor with Wometco Vending Company.  Shorty was an avid golfer and loved outdoor activities including fishing on Lake Hartwell.  He was of the Baptist Faith.

In addition to his wife, Audrey, he is survived by a son, Stanley E. Collins and his wife, Cindy, of Powdersville; a daughter, Sharon Collins Collier of Anderson; a brother, Gennar Collins of Anderson; 4 grandchildren, Katrina Ebernickle, Kristin Gorrell, Aaron Collins and Sean Collins.  Also surviving are 4 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Collins was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 2 sisters. 

A Graveside Service to honor and celebrate the life of William E. Collins will be held on Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at 3 PM, at the Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, with Rev. Richard Burgess officiating.  The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 5, 2013, from 12 Noon until 2 PM.

GERALD C. OLIVER

October 1, 1947 – June 1, 2013

Gerald Curtis Oliver, age 65, of Anderson, passed away on Saturday, June 1, 2013, at Rainey Hospice House.  Born in Greenville, Gerald was the son of Nellie Herron Oliver of Anderson, and the late Olin C. Oliver.  He proudly served his country in the US Army during the Viet Nam Era, including a tour of duty in Germany.  Gerald was a member of River of Life Church of God. He loved his family and friends.  He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his mother, Nellie Oliver, he is survived by 2 sons, Curtis R. Oliver and his wife, Sheila, of Greenville, and Christopher Mark Oliver of Belton; 1 brother, Dale E. Oliver and his wife, Polly, of Anderson; a sister Diane Holland and her husband, Michael, of Anderson;  a nephew, Shawn Michael Holland; and 3 grandchildren.  Also surviving are 2 very special people who were like his own children, Cindy Oliver Hanks and Eddie Oliver, both of Belton.  In addition to his father, Mr. Oliver was preceded in death by a son, Michael Eugene Oliver. 

A Graveside service honoring the life of Mr. Gerald C. Oliver will be held on Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at 3 PM, at M. J. “Dolly” Cooper Veteran’s Cemetery, with Rev. Kevin Jones officiating.  The family will be at their respective homes, and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 5, 2013, from 12:30 PM until 2 PM.
