Frankie Isbell Childress

Anderson, SC - Sara Frank “Frankie” Isbell Childress, of Clemson Downs, Clemson, SC, died on March 11th, 2017, at age 89.

Born in, and lifetime resident of, Anderson, SC, she was the daughter of the late John Frank and Eula Norine McGill Isbell. She received a B.S. Degree in Business Education from Winthrop College and a M.S. Degree in Business Education from the University of South Carolina. She taught at Ford High School in Laurens, SC; McCants Junior High in Anderson; and Anderson College.

Frankie was a long-time member of Central Presbyterian Church, where she served variously as President of the Women of the Church, Elder, Adult Sunday School teacher, and pianist for the fifth grade Sunday School.  After her own surgery for breast cancer, Frankie created and led (for decades) the “Pillow Day” ministry of the Joanna Circle.  Volunteers met monthly and sewed small pillows for the comfort of breast cancer patients at the hospital.  The pillows were then distributed to women after surgery by other volunteers from the American Cancer Society.

Frankie was a blue ribbon-winning knitter, genealogist, and member of Beta Sigma Phi.  She lived her belief that a smile goes a long way toward making the world a better place.

She is survived by daughter April Eulanne Childress of Mountain Rest, SC, and her husband Joseph L. Tinsley, and a daughter Faith James Childress of Kansas City, MO, and her husband Hootan Shambayati. While her sister Hyacinth preceded her in death, she is survived by her brother, James Oliver “Sonny” Isbell, and his wife Bernie; nephews Frank Isbell (Kathy), Franklin F.Childress (Rachel); nieces Christie Isbell Hamberis (Keefe), and Kaye Childress Rhodenheiser (Michael).

The family is especially grateful for the late Dorothy Bell Davis and her family for their long and continuing friendship.  An special thanks goes to the caring staffs at The Garden House of Anderson and Clemson Downs HC 16.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 15th, at Central Presbyterian Church, conducted by Dr. David J. Bailey. Burial will follow in Old Silver Brook Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 14th, in the Parlor of Central Presbyterian Church.

Memorials may be made to the Cancer Association of Anderson, Rhodes Respite Care at First Presbyterian Church, and the Alzheimer’s Association.  Or, the family invites those who can to celebrate Frankie’s life by donating blood.
