Betty Fant Hammond, age 91, of 904 2nd St NE, Hickory, NC, went to be with the Lord in the early-morning hours of Friday, February 6th.  Born in Anderson, SC, and a longtime resident, she was the daughter of the late Ernest G. Fant, Jr. and the late Alice Alberta Gaillard Fant.  For 40 years, she was the loving wife of the late Robert Edward "Eddie" Hammond.

For several years, she assisted her husband at Hammond's Grocery on N. Main St., but she spent most of her life as a homemaker, and a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.  Betty touched the lives of so many people throughout her life.  She enjoyed cooking (and was mildly famous for her pineapple casserole) and making afghan blankets.  Betty was a member of First Baptist Church and attended the Rebecca Sunday School Class.

Mrs. Hammond is survived by one son, Robert "Gil" Hammond, and his wife, Marcia, of Hickory,  NC; two grandsons, Robert Brandon Hammond and his wife,  Jennifer, of Fayetteville, NC and Ryan Murdock of Candler,  NC; three great-grandchildren, Maryn Hammond of Fayetteville, and Kai and Reagan Murdock of Candler; a son-in-law, Gregg Murdock and his wife Sandy of Piedmont, SC.  Also surviving are four nieces Alberta Brown, Ellen Thompson, Suzanne Todd, and Priscilla Glenn and one nephew W.A. "Bill" Thompson.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter Betty Catherine Hammond Murdock and three sisters, Martha Thompson, Hilda Epton Boggs, and Kitty Jones Hillard.

A Funeral Service to celebrate and honor the life of Mrs. Hammond will be held at 3 PM on Sunday February  8th at the Chapel of Sullivan-King Mortuary at 3205 N. Highway 81, Anderson, SC with Rev. Dr. James R. Thomason officiating. Burial will follow at New Silver Brook Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Sullivan-King Mortuary on Sunday from 2 PM to 3 PM.
The family suggests contributions in memory of Mrs. Hammond be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621; or First Baptist Church, 307 S. Manning Street, Anderson, SC 29624.
