Dr. Richard Charles Fox, age 88, of 1203 Cobbs Glenn Drive, passed away at his residence on Saturday, September 07, 2013.  Born at home in Athens (Calhoun County), MI, he was the son of the late Marion Fox and the late Mary Snyder Fox. 

He was raised on a farm and graduated from Athens High School in June, 1943, and volunteered to enter the US Army in September.  He was assigned to aerial gunnery school and following graduation, was assigned to a B-12 Bomber Group of the Eighth Air Force.  He was discharged from Lawson Army General Hospital in May, 1945, and entered Michigan State College in East Lansing receiving a B.S. Degree in June, 1948, and a master’s degree in Forest Entomology in June, 1949, from Miami University in Oxford, OH.  Later he was assigned as State Forest Entomologist for the Michigan Conservation Department in Lansing, MI. Some years later, he returned to Michigan State University to pursue the PhD degree.  This degree was rewarded in 1958, and employment followed at Clemson College in Clemson, SC.  He retired from Clemson University as Professor Emeritus of Entomology in December, 1981.  Following retirement, he developed and operated Whistle Cleaning Systems which he managed for 20 years.  He was the last survivor of his original family.  He cherished his older brother John, and his older sister, Patricia and his beloved parents all of whom preceded him in death.  “Doc” was a devoted member of Young Memorial ARP Church.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 20 years, Margaret L. Fox of the residence; sons, James Richard Fox of Placerville, CA, Bruce Allison Fox of Travelers Rest, SC, Joel Snyder Fox of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and a step-son Richard Kyle Wilson of Anderson, who was raised in the home; daughters, Cari Ann Treece of Greenville and Erin Chumley of Morningside, TX; also surviving are 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. 

 

A Memorial Service celebrating and honoring the life of Dr. Richard Fox will be held on Tuesday, September 10, 2013, at 2 PM, at the Young Memorial ARP Church, with Rev. Dr. Jeff Bost officiating.  The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Monday, September 9, 2013, from 6 PM until 8 PM.

 

The family suggests that contributions in memory of Dr. Fox be made to Young Memorial ARP Church, 508 Boulevard, Anderson, SC 29621.
