H. ELDRIDGE CURLIS, JR.

September 29, 1935 – February 6, 2012
Horace Eldridge Curlis, Jr., age 76, passed away on Monday, February 6, 2012, after a valiant battle against cancer, with his wife of 58 years, Barbara, at his side. Born September 29, 1935, in Richmond, Virginia, he was the son of the late Horace Eldridge Curlis, Sr. and the late Virginia Ware Curlis.
A graduate of the College of William and Mary, Mr. Curlis was a chemical engineer and consultant in the capacitor industry at factories around the world. Mr. Curlis co-owned the Curlis Company, a gift and bridal shop, on-the-square in Pendleton with his wife, Barbara, for 30 years. He loved his family and genealogy, and was a past Governor of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in South Carolina.
Mr. Curlis was survived by his wife, Barbara Dale Wright Curlis; sons, H.E. “Ridgie” Curlis, III, and his wife Alice of Pendleton, SC, and David Curlis and his wife Anne of Huntersville, NC; a daughter, Suzanne Curlis of Huntsville, AL; a sister, Mary East of Forest, Virginia; a brother-in-law, Al Hott of Mustang, OK. Mr. Curlis was also survived by six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, four nieces and four nephews.
In addition to his parents, Eldridge was predeceased by a sister, Isabelle Phillips.
A graveside service honoring the life of Mr. Curlis will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at Memory Gardens, Clemson, SC. The body will lie in state at The McDougald Funeral home. The family will receive friends at the home of Barbara and Eldridge, 108 Nottingham Way, Anderson, immediately following the service.
