January 10, 1929 – February 24, 2012 

Rachel Anne MacCartney, of Summit Place of Anderson, passed away on Friday, February 24, 2012. 

Born in Chesnee, SC she was a graduate of Chesnee High School and Winthrop College.   She was a member of the Anderson Women’s Club and First Presbyterian Church of Anderson where she served on numerous committees.   Mrs. MacCartney volunteered at AnMed Health in the sewing room every Tuesday and was very active in Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority and the Friday Afternoon Book Club.  

Mrs. MacCartney began her teaching career in Charlotte, NC where she taught Home Economics.   She and her family moved to Anderson in 1960, and in 1969, she began teaching at McCants Junior High School, and at T.L. Hanna High School, retiring in 1991.   During her teaching career, she received several “Teacher of the Year” Awards. 

Her greatest joys in life were her grandchildren and her hobbies were gardening and cooking.  She was known by all as someone who was always there to help and serve others in any way that was needed.  She treasured her family, friends, and students as life’s greatest gifts.   

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, John A. MacCartney; her daughter, Libby Holliday and her husband, Richard of Belton, SC; sisters, Madelyn Powell and Nell Cook and her husband Carol all of Anderson, SC; and grandchildren, Jill Deaton and her husband Austin of Easley, SC and Blake Holliday of Belton, SC. 

She was predeceased by her mother, Vinelle Sawyer Powell and brother, William Augustus Powell. 

Following a private family committal service, a Memorial Service will be held in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home on Monday, February 27, 2012 at 2:00 PM with the Reverend Dr. Dennis R. Tedder officiating.   The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
