JOHN W. SHAMEL

ANDERSON, SC - John William Shamel, 76, passed away Saturday, February 11, 2012 at his residence.

John was born November 1, 1935 in Tobaccoville, Forsyth County, NC. He was the son of the late Fred and Myrtle Moore Shamel. He grew up and attended schools in Spencer, Rowan County, NC. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. John retired from the restaurant and food service industries. He was a lifelong follower of the Lutheran faith and a charter member of Abiding Savior Lutheran Church. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 5 brothers and sisters. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

John is survived by his wife of 52 years, Shirley Shamel of the home; 2 daughters and son-in-laws, Deana and Tom Davenport of LaGrange, GA and Amanda and Tim Dutton of Piedmont, SC; 4 grandsons, Thomas "Rett" Everett Davenport, III, of Atlanta, GA,  John Parker Davenport and Spencer Reed Davenport both of LaGrange, GA and Michael Hobbs Dutton of Piedmont, SC and many other relatives and friends. 

Funeral service will be held on Monday at 2pm at Abiding Savior Lutheran Church with Pastor Howard Jones officiating. A private burial will follow at M. J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 until 4pm at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, 3205 Hwy 81 N.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Abiding Savior Lutheran Church 1905 E. Greenville Street, Anderson, SC 29621.
