TOWNVILLE, SC - Mr. Bobby Jay Oakley, age 81, of 415 Lakewood Drive, Townville, died Sunday, January 8, 2012, in Townville.
Born in Anderson, SC, he was a son of the late Roy F. Oakley and Decie Peace Oakley Sexton. He graduated from Anderson Boys High School. Mr. Oakley was a career military man and retired from the US Army as a medic. He served during the Vietnam War; the Korean War and had also served two years in the US Air Force. He worked with the US Postal Service as a Rural Carrier and was a member of the Townville Masonic Lodge and the Sons of Confederacy. He was an active member of Double Springs Baptist Church where he taught the Men’s Sunday school class. He will always be remembered affectionately by the members of Double Springs Baptist Church as the Candy Man.
He is survived by his son, Van Oakley and his wife, Lisa of Harrisburg, NC, and his daughter-in-law, Terry Oakley of Townville; two grandchildren, David Oakley and P. J. Oakley; three great-grandchildren; Justin Oakley, Joshua Oakley and Alyssa Teague and sister, Helen O. Phillips, Anderson.
In addition to his wife and his parents, he was predeceased by three sons, Bobby Jay, Perry and Furman Oakley and brothers, Charles Ray and John William “Bill” Oakley.
The Funeral Service will be held Thursday, January 12, 2012, at 11:00 AM at Double Springs Baptist Church with the Reverend Kyle Caudell. Burial will follow in Double Springs Baptist Church Cemetery with full Military Honors and Masonic Rites. Mr. Oakley will be placed in the church at 10:00 AM.
The family will be at the home of his daughter-in-law, Terry at 1024 Hatton Ford Road, and will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Wednesday, January 11, 2012, at The McDougald Funeral Home.
