She was the daughter of Vertna Patman and Joel Marion Means, and the sister of the late Rebecca M. Shepard and Alfred I. Means. She graduated from the University of Georgia and from the Tulane School of Social Work. She worked as a social worker at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia where she met her husband, the late W. She was a faithful member of St. John's United Methodist Church and participated in many community organizations over the years.
