ANDERSON – Alvin Guy Shanklin, 91, of 4005 Highway 24, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 1, 2010. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Viola Barnum Shanklin.
Mr. Shanklin was born April 22, 1919 in Greenville County to the late Julius Lewis Shanklin, Sr. and Cora Darby Shanklin. He was a retired textile employee with J.P. Stevens, Appleton Plant. He was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church, the John McLees Sunday School Class, and a former member of Divver Masonic Lodge. He served his country during World War II in the United States Army.
Mr. Shanklin was an avid bird observer and animal lover. His backyard residence was a certified wildlife habitat.
Surviving are his two daughters, Sandra Martin and her husband, Cleo, and Pat Buckner and her husband, Butch, all of Anderson; four grandchildren, Bob, Jon, and Alan Martin, and Leigh Ann Buckner; three great-grandchildren, Haley, Logan, and Colt Martin; and one sister, Margaret Shanklin Laird of Conway, Arkansas.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Julius Lewis Shanklin, Jr. and Albert William Shanklin.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 3, 2010 at New Prospect Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Tony Smith. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m.
Thursday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Downtown Chapel, 401 North Main Street, Anderson. The family is at the residence. Flowers are permitted or memorials may be made to New Prospect Baptist Church Building Fund, 2503 Whitehall Road, Anderson, SC 29625.
