ANDERSON, SC -- Frances Black Owen, 72, of 4324 Country Club Circle, Virginia Beach, Virginia, passed away May 17, 2010, at AnMed Health Medical Center in Anderson, South Carolina, following an extended, courageous battle with cancer.  

A native of Anderson and a graduate of T. L. Hanna High School, she was the daughter of the late Cliff T. Black and Ruth Whitten Black of Anderson and the wife of Benjamin L. Owen, Jr., of Virginia Beach. For 22 years, she was the administrative high school secretary at Norfolk Christian Schools in Norfolk, Virginia.   There, she was a beloved school icon, performing both administrative duties and tenderly attending to the every need of generations of students she loved.  She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Norfolk, Virginia.  

Mrs. Owen's life was characterized by caring for and loving family and others.  She was a selfless and dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother for whom her faith and her family were paramount.  Surviving her are her husband, Ben Owen, of the home, two daughters, Deborah Owen Jordal of Virginia Beach, Cynthia Diane (Owen) Whitaker of Anderson, two sons-in-law, Edward A. Jordal of Virginia Beach and Evans Whitaker of Anderson, a granddaughter, Ana Jordal of Virginia Beach, a sister, Margaret Black Hill of Anderson, a brother and sister-in-law, Billy and Sylvia Black of Anderson, an uncle, Fred Whitten of Anderson, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins in both South Carolina and Virginia.  

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, May 20, 2010, at Mrs. Owen's childhood church, North Anderson Baptist Church, 2308 North Main Street in Anderson, and will be conducted by the Reverend Bill Rigsby.  Interment will follow the service at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Anderson.  A second memorial service will be held in Virginia Beach at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Norfolk Christian Schools Worthy Servants Fund, 255 Thole Street, Norfolk, Virginia 23505.
