ANDERSON – Joseph Hollingsworth Carter, Jr., 91, of Anderson, husband of the late Sadler Neely Carter, died Monday, February 22, 2010 at Hospice of Laurens County, Clinton.
Born April 14, 1918 in Mount Airy, NC, he was the son of the late Dr. Joseph H. Carter, Sr., a former ministerat Central Presbyterian Church in Anderson, and the late Elizabeth Bright Carter. He was a Lt. Col. in the U.S. Army- Air Corp during World War II, where he served as a pilot. Mr. Carter was a graduate of Clemson University and was retired from Southwestern Life Insurance Company, and later worked as a real estate agent. He was a former President of the Lions Club, associated with the Boy Scouts of America and the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club, and was honored as Salvation Army Board member of the Year. Mr. Carter was a member of Central Presbyterian Church in Anderson where he served as a Deacon, Elder, and Sunday school Superintendent. He enjoyed being a part of the Jim Ezelle Men’s Intercessory Prayer group for a number of years.
Survivors include two sons, Joseph Hollingsworth Carter, III and wife, Jane of Statesville, NC, and James Neely Carter and wife, Deannie of York, SC; two daughters, Elizabeth (Betsy) Earle Carter Ducworth and husband, Tommy of Paris, TN, and Mary Sadler Carter Waldron and husband, Chuck of Mountville, SC; twelve grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Carter Sitton of Anderson.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Jeanne Landrum and Virginia Covington.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 25, 2010 at Central Presbyterian Church in Anderson followed by a time of visitation with family and friends in the church parlor.
