NOVEMBER 11, 1927 – DECEMBER 20, 2010

CLINTON, SC – Marguerite Schoen Carpenter, age 83, beloved wife of the late Colonel John Sidney Carpenter, passed away on Monday, December 20, 2010. 

Born in Cleveland, OH, Mrs. Carpenter was the daughter of the late Victor Hugo Schoen and Rose Kiss Schoen.  She received degrees from both Miami University in Oxford, OH, and the University of Wyoming.  Mrs. Carpenter was a retired Educator having taught fourth thru twelfth grades in Wyoming, Utah, Virginia, and South Carolina.  Additionally, she taught at the University of Wyoming in Laramie as well as Charleston Southern University.   Mrs. Carpenter was a member and Elder in the Summerville Presbyterian Church; member and past President of the Alumnae Chapter of Alpha Chi Omega; member of the Upstate Chapter of Alpha Chi Omega; lifetime member and former State President of the American Association of University Women with dual memberships in Anderson and Summerville branches; lifetime memberships in Delta Omicron (International Music Fraternity) and Sigma Delta Pi (Honorary Spanish Fraternity); and a member of the American Guild of Organists.  She was a longtime accompanist on the state level for the Solo & Ensemble Competition for the South Carolina Band Directors Competition.  Mrs. Carpenter was instrumental in founding the Summerville Music Club and was active within the Summerville Book Club.  While a resident of Anderson, SC, she was active within the Literary Society as well as being a committed associate member of the Mount Zion Presbyterian Church in Sandy Springs, SC.  She may also be remembered as an avid Environmentalist who was passionate about recycling. 

Survivors include her three sons: John Sidney Carpenter, III, and wife, Tracy, of Anderson, SC, Robert David Carpenter of Manning, SC, and Victor Joseph Carpenter and wife, Laurey, of Greenwood, SC; five grandchildren, five nieces, and many cousins. 

Memorial Services will be held in Clinton, SC, as well as Summerville, SC.  On Thursday, December 23, 2010, a Memorial Service will be held at the Presbyterian Home of SC – Clinton, SC, at 10:00 am.   On Monday, December 27, 2010, a Memorial Service will be held at the Summerville Presbyterian Church, Summerville, SC, at 11:00 am.  A family committal service will be held at the Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, SC.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorials be made to the Governors School for the Arts & Humanities, 15 University Street, Greenville, SC, 29601, or to the Summerville Presbyterian Church, 407 South Laurel Street, Summerville, SC, 29483.
