Anderson, SC – Dr. Joseph Ansel (Andy) Evans, Sr. passed away peacefully to be with his Lord on December 15, 2010 at the Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home in Anderson, SC. He was the son of the late Delma Marie Parnell Evans and Mason Garvin Evans of Iva, SC, and born December 23, 1924.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Martha Ann Gunter Evans, his three siblings and their spouses: George W. (wife Sara), Thurmond (wife Clyde), and Dr. Sue E. O’Rourke (husband Bill), as well as his nephew, Charlie.
Voted “Most Humorous” as a senior in his high school class, Dr. Evans served two years in the US Military during World War II, and then pursued a degree as a Doctor of Chiropractic at Lincoln Chiropractic College in Indiana. After a successful practice in Panama City, FL, Dr. Evans returned home to Anderson, SC, with his wife Ernestine Crocker Evans and first-born Joseph, Jr. to begin a practice at home on McDuffie Street in Anderson. His practice eventually expanded as did his family. He and his family of six children were members of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon. Andy also served as President of the Anderson chapter of the Exchange Club. After retiring from his practice in Anderson, he joined the practice of his best friend, the late Dr. Bill Young, in West Pelzer. He also practiced for several years with his son, Dr. Joey Evans, at Chapin Family Practice in Chapin, SC.
Dr. Evans is survived by four sons and two daughters: Dr. Joseph Evans, Jr., of Chapin, SC; Duane Evans and wife Elizabeth of Greenville, SC; Clay Evans and wife Kelly of Birmingham, AL; Anne Marie McGill and husband Pete of Pawley’s Island, SC; Kelly Sue Wolff and husband Alan of Simpsonville, SC; and Phil Evans and wife Melissa, also of Simpsonville, SC. Andy is also survived by sixteen grandchildren and one great-grandson including Ashley Gharib and husband Ali of Washington, D.C.; Joseph Adams Evans of Chapin, SC; Anna Okupinski, husband Mike and great-grandson Quinn of Greenville, SC; Mikal Evans of Brooklyn, NY; Tom Vestal Evans of Greenville, SC; Haley and Lynley Evans of Birmingham, AL; Andie Evans of Los Angeles, CA; Evans McGill of Columbia, SC; Katie McGill of Athens, GA; Ally, Analisa and Karly Wolff of Greenville, SC; Madison Evans of Clemson, SC; and Andrew and James Evans of Simpsonville, SC. He also leaves two step-daughters, Karen Williams and daughter Brittany Benish, Susan Everts and daughters Chelsea and Lilly, as well as step-son Kenny Lawing and his son Christopher.
A Memorial Service honoring the life of Dr. Evans will be held in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home in Anderson at 2:00 PM on Thursday, December 23, 2010, his 86th birthday. The family will receive friends immediately following the service and welcomes flowers or a donation to your favorite charity in the name of Dr. Andy Evans.
