ANDERSON - Garnet Lee Hanley, 85, of South Highway 187, died Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Franklin County, GA, he was the son of the late Noah and Ella Roach Hanley. The family moved to South Carolina early in his life. Chaplain Hanley was a Veteran of World War II, having served with the 101st Airborne Division, 3rd Army under Gen. George Patton in the European Theatre. He received many decorations, of which the Parachutist Badge and three Purple Hearts with the Bronze Star were the most revered. He was an active member of Central Presbyterian Church where he taught Sunday School, and was past President of the John D. McArthur/Men’s S.S. Class. He also served on the Diaconate and the Session.

Chaplain Hanley was first married to the late Ruth Ashley and from that union is survived by a son, Kenneth L. Hanley. He is survived by his wife, Katherine McClure McGee Hanley; son, Mac M. McGee and daughter, Mrs. Phillip (Kathe) Long; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, all of Anderson.

Chaplain Hanley was a Life Member of the following: VFW Post 5996 and held the office of Chaplain, S.C. Dept. Chaplain; Commander of Palmetto State Chapter 530 Military Order of the Purple Heart and Dept. Commander for 2 years; Chaplain of American Legion Post 184; Military Order of Cootie; and Disabled American Veterans. He provided transportation to and from VA Hospitals and clinics for veterans who had no other transportation. The Honorable Butler Derrick called him “Mister Veteran”. Governor David Beasley presented him with the Order of the Palmetto for unselfish volunteer service in 1995. He was Past Master of Divver Masonic Lodge #349; active member of the Scottish Rite Temple, Hejaz Shrine, and was invested with the Knight Commander, Court of Honor, 32°. In October, 2007, he received the 33° Inspector General. Presently, he was Chaplain at Richard M. Campbell Veteran’s Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Central Presbyterian Church conducted by Dr. David J. Bailey and Dr. Martin L. Harkey, Jr. Burial, with Masonic Rites by Divver Masonic Lodge and Military Honors conducted by the Campbell Patriots Honor Guard, will be in Forest Lawn  Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. in the Central Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. The family is at the residence.
